A Reflection on standoff between NVCO & Nagaland Police

On reading  the present tussle going on between the NVCO and the Police Department on  the issue of lifting up of check gates, one can understand that the rampant money collections at check gates  is but only a symptom of a  society which  is not keeping  in good health. The functioning of a society can be very well compared to the functioning of the human body.  If one organ of the body is sick but if the head do take sincere initiatives and effort to take timely remedial actions, other vital organs of the body is bound to get effected too and the worst case scenario would be, if the sickness of the whole body is left unattended without any intervention for a prolonged period, then the entire body with all its organs will slowly dysfunction, collapse and finally die and decay.
The elected leader of a society represents the head of the human body and makes all the major decisions for the society. The bureaucracy, the technocrats and the government servants all carry out and  execute the initiatives  of the elected legislatures within the provisions and frameworks  of the statutory laws  which are the principle guidelines of rules laid down  for effective governance  of the State. All laws have a moral beginning which is inspired from God. This is why it is very important that our leaders are God fearing and not immoral in their lifestyle, since their lifestyle influences their decision which in turn  effects  the running of the government departments and machineries and thereby effecting every citizens in the  society.  Morality differentiates man from animals. No society in History has developed and flourished meaningfully without adopting fair play and justice. Throughout History, terrible wars and conflicts took its toll between various nations which were first triggered from the minds of sick and arrogant leaders. Throughout the various hierarchies of the state machinery, public properties are treated as offices of profit to effectively serve the family and relatives of the legislatures, ministers and their officials holding the office. Even commodities which are meant for the welfare of the poorer and unprivileged groups do not reach the beneficiaries as it vanishes within the periphery of the above mentioned circles.   Off course, there are many upright leaders and officers in services too, but under the present mindset, these few people are overwhelmed and are reduced to a minority and they have to succumb under pressure of the mindset of the system.  There are also those officials who are too lazy to work and their carefree and unaccountable lifestyles pollute and effect the entire office work environment. I suggest that these people can do a great service to the society by taking voluntary retirements and start entrepreneurship and business ventures. Almost every department in our state is manned by just a handful of few very responsible, sincere and diligent workers who has to take up the entire burden and responsibilities of their department so as to atleast extend the basic minimum services to the people.
Kezhokhoto Savi, president of NVCO has been exposing corruption in various places of offices of our society single headedly and with extraordinary zeal. He does not stand to profit directly from his endeavour except for the general benefit which comes to the entire society. Perhaps it is also time for all of us to see reason and extend our support and helping hands to the endeavours which is also the responsibility of every citizen. Today the world is changing into a consumer’s haven and only the best of the best services extended to others can survive and stay popular in the market.  With the changing of times, even our society needs to throw away the old mindset and restore ‘merit’ and ‘good service’ as top priorities above every other quality in the running of the Government offices.
Let us list a few merits and demerits of the present exercises of closing down the many check gates in Nagaland:-

1)   There may  not be many opportunities left to earn the quick bucks at check gates and therefore, the policeman may be prompted to resort to other methods which may be destructives or even constructive if they leave job and start becoming entrepreneurs.
2)   Every policeman is not corrupt, and the upright policeman can do their duty without being polluted by the other corrupt colleagues. The upright policeman can do his duty with honour and dignity as a result, command the genuine love and respect of the citizens and of travellers on the road. It is good to know that the IRB of Nagaland have become the first choice of security force now for the Nation. I guess this is only possible because they were upright in their duty and services to which the credit does not go to the politicians but first To God, then their parents and families and churches which brought them up with moral values. It is the biggest lie for the society to keep giving credits to politicians, when most of the time politicians are the biggest stumbling blocks for good and unprejudiced works to take place in the society. Because of the politician’s agenda of serving their own selfish interest, the general public works which represents the future of the entire society are highly jeopardised.
3)   The public at large shall benefit from getting the essential and construction commodities at a reasonable price which is a direct benefit to consumers.  As a result of lifting of check gates the charges of trucks and good carriers shall also have to be brought down by the municipal councils to a reasonable rate.
4)   The check gates at the main entry and exit points of Nagaland can become more effective, efficient with better facilities and fairer to all. This may also result in bringing about goodwill and respect of our neighbouring states and tourist.
However, we all know that the above  may only  hold true  for a short while until demoralization sets in with the police department  if the rest of us the society commencing  from  the high, mighty and arrogant  Politicians, to the Bureaucrats, Technocrats, Contractors and others in  the government services and even  citizens  continue with the same present habit of indulging in open and rampant corrupt practices, violating all the laid down rules and regulations of public work places  without applying any checks and  breaks. We obviously cannot expect to let only the policeman alone stay upright and the rest of the society to continue to indulge in status quo.
Since  all the organs of a body needs to be either healthy together or sick together,  even  live together and  die together, it is time for all of us to decide which direction we are heading next. Off course any decision to change must first began with the initiatives coming from the heads of state, starting from the Chief Minister Himself and his Ministerial colleagues down to the bureaucracy, technocrats and to the peon and also the villagers and citizens of our State,   or else, such an endeavour cannot last too long. The Government of India at the Centre was forced to work again on the Lokpal Bill against all its wishes because the legislators were simply not willing to change their attitude and lifestyles. The Church is the soul of our society, and therefore,   instead of preaching the too many do’s and don’t,  and keeping away from the situations facing the society, it may be  high time to  sincerely start participating and extending its fellowship of sincere Love  to those whom we know needs  help.
