Reforms required in State Govt accounting system

Kohima, October 18 (MExN): Niranjan Pant, Deputy Comptroller & Auditor General was in Kohima for one day official visit. During his visit, he inspected the Office of the Accountant General (A&E) Nagaland and also had discussions with the Chief Secretary, the Finance Commissioner and other officers and staff members from the Finance Department, stated a press release issued by Section Officer Akum Chuba.

Niranjan Pant highlighted the need for the State Government to improve the accounting systems in the State. He stressed the need for the State to adopt the Government Accounting Standards that have been brought out by the Government Accounting Standard Advisory Board (GASAB) to bring in more transparency and clarity in the Government Accounts and to move along with the other State Governments where initiatives have been already taken.

The Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General reiterated the need for the State to complete the Treasury Computerization process early and also to move towards accrual accounting, which the State Government had accepted in principle.  In the light of the next Finance Commission being constituted in the near future, he stressed the need for the State to project a better picture about the State Government Accounts before the Commission in their presentations.

Niranjan Pant wanted the State Government to associate the Accountant General (A&E) more closely in the reform activities taken up by the Government in the accounting systems to allow the AG to add value to the systems proposed.

The Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner welcomed the suggestions made by the Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General and agreed to move forward in the proposed reforms and also to closely associate the Accountant General (A&E) in future reform activities.

Niranjan Pant is proceeding to Imphal on October 18.
