Rehab centre staff held over death in Dimapur

Dimapur, November 27 (MExN): Dimapur Police have arrested four individuals and the owner of a rehabilitation centre in connection with the death of a 46-year-old man who was brought dead to a hospital on November 26.

According to a press note issued by the office of the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Diphuphar Police Station received telephonic information at around 3 pm from Referral Hospital regarding a deceased person brought from a rehabilitation facility. A police team immediately proceeded to the hospital for verification. The doctor on duty confirmed that the individual had been brought dead.

The deceased was identified as Pradeep Basumatary.

Police stated that an inquest was conducted following procedure. Preliminary examination revealed visible marks of physical assault on the body, including multiple bruises on both lower limbs and buttocks, as well as injury marks on the legs, left cheek, and left hand. These injuries were suspected to have been caused by blunt objects, raising suspicion that the victim had been physically assaulted, ultimately leading to his death.

The body has been shifted to Dimapur District Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police confirmed that four individuals allegedly directly involved in the incident, along with the owner of the rehabilitation centre, have been arrested and remanded to custody. “Dimapur Police is investigating the case thoroughly. All necessary forensic, technical, and procedural steps are being meticulously documented to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay,” the note said.

The incident has also led to a parallel inquiry into the rehabilitation centre to verify its licensing status and operational standards. The investigation has been expanded to assess the centre’s adherence to regulations, including operational compliance, validity of licensing, and adequacy of in-house medical facilities such as the availability of qualified mental health professionals.
