The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) commemorated its 25 years celebration on December 13 with Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio as the chief guest. Held at Viswema, John Government Higher Secondary School, the guests of honour were ER. Vikho-o Yhoshü, Parliamentary Secretary and Er Kropol Vitsu, Parliamentary Secretary.
Stressing on the concept of work culture, Lok Sabha Neiphiu Rio maintained that the work culture must be revived among the young Nagas again with the growing complacency among the youth and the failure to earn a living through sheer hard work and alternative jobs.
“Our children must be taught that they have to work and earn to eat,” said Rio while citing the example of Japanese practices where they focus on instilling good manners and values to their children at a young age starting from their early education.
While acknowledging that the youth organisation has contributed immensely for the building and progress of Naga society, Rio also reminded that ‘The youth are our hope’. While the hard work and efforts that parents and elders have invested on the youth cannot be repaid, Rio noted that the only payback is when the youth proves themselves to be responsible and successful in society and providing a sense of security and satisfaction to the elders and parents.
The criticality of rekindling tradition and improvisation of traditions was further stressed where Rio pointed out that the traditions and cultures taught will mould the child, therefore Nagas must start instilling the values and good practices of one’s culture and traditions to the children.
“With the advent of modernity, traditions should not be pushed aside. Tradition does not only meaning following the ancestors’ religion but it is about adopting the values, good practices of our traditions. And we must adopt them with improvisation in relevance to the present,” said Rio.
To rekindle traditions, Rio suggested for finding innovative ways to upgrade one’s traditions such as the setting up of cultural bodies to research and document stories, folk songs and dances especially food which is the highest form of culture. Rio warned that the complacency of the Naga youth will lead to the regression of the Naga society, therefore urged the youth to move out of their comfort zone.
Basing his speech on the theme ‘Rekindling traditions’ which he viewed is a major concern today on the Kropol Vitsu lamented that today the Naga society is forgetting the values and traditions of our ancestors and elders. Vitsu shared a brief history about his village Viswema, and urged the gathering to know one’s origins especially one’s village origin, culture and stories. “You must at least know where and how your village originated. Write it down and keep it in record,” said Vitsu who urged SAYO to chalk out its future objectives and visions with the completion of 25 years.
Because of the instability that has been going on in the government, we have not been able to help out our people for which we deeply regret, said Vikho-o Yhoshü in a brief speech who further expressed hope that “In future we can all work together for the good and progress of our constituencies.”
The themes song written and composed by Keneikrül Noswe was performed during event. The morning session was followed by the cultural program where the traditional blessing was given by Pungon Kikhi, Shekrü-o, Viswema. Cultural performances were delivered by the villages in the Southern Angami region.
