DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (MExN): Several organizations have voiced concern at the arrest of five persons from Rilan Village, bordering Assam on May 27, and who are reportedly being kept under custody at Diphu Police Station.
A joint statement from the United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) and the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) claimed that the persons are being kept under “unlawful custody” and condemned the “highhandedness of the Assam Police and Forest Personnel for arresting the lawful citizens of Nagaland based on the whims and fancies of the authorities under Assam Government.”
The UNTABA and NCD had a joint sitting at the Office of NCD and deliberated thoroughly on the development.
The two bodies expressed concern at what it said was the “recurrent obsession of the self-style authorities of Assam in abducting, arresting, killing and demanding ransom for the release of the citizens of Nagaland from the custody of Assam Police in the border districts of Diphu, Golagath, Jorhat and Sibsagar without any tangible reasons.”
They demanded that the authorities of the Diphu District Administrations “immediately release the lawful citizens of Rilan village, Nagaland without any conditions,” failing which, they cautioned that the organizations would be compelled to “initiate appropriate steps.”
They also asked the Dimapur district administration to immediately initiate appropriate step with its counterparts at Diphu for the unconditional release of the five persons, while also working towards stopping the “highhandedness of the authorities of Diphu district administration of Assam.”
Meanwhile, the Dimapur Lotha Students’ Union, Rilan Village Council and the Lotha Youth Organisation Dimapur also issued statements calling upon authorities in both Nagaland and Assam to take action towards securing release of the arrested persons.
