Remnants of traditions...

A traditional Naga jail house at Old Chare Town (under Tuensang district) seen here in the photo. This kind of jail house, which has different names for the different tribes of Nagaland are constructed with the purpose of imprisoning offenders in the society for a day or two. This small jail which can hardly house a person is said to be the most uncomfortable place to stay where the captive cannot sit, stand or sleep. What more whoever goes inside such a jail becomes the object of derision and ridicule in the society since the captive is made to be seen by all the people. Though with the changes of time, such jail houses are fast becoming a rare sight in the society, but in most villages where customary laws still holds strong, this kind of jail houses remains one of the best way to control habitual offenders in the society.
