The age old wisdom of our fathers as rightly reflected in the 1929 Memorandum to Simon Commission has once again been proven right in the fight of Rengma Nagas to remain in their ancestral land against the onslaught of the teeming Indians. It was the acknowledgement of this wisdom that prompted Sir Akbar Hydari and Sir Gopinath Bordoloi to include the offer to amalgamate all the Naga inhabited area under one administration unit as per 9 points agreement in 1947.However, the subsequent history show that the GOI took no step to fulfil its own commitment. Thus, this can be said to have ignited the beginning of the Naga imbroglio which include the present “Karbi and Rengma Naga imbroglio.”
Perhaps it is also not farfetched to surmise that it was the realisation of this mistakes that had prompted the GOI again to offer NHTA in 1957 followed by granting of full fledged state of Nagaland in 1963 under similar 16 points agreement. However in both cases the GOI failed to fulfil its commitments to amalgate Nagas territorially and the state of Nagaland was created without settled legal boundary till date. And as such, the Rengma Nagas or Zeliang Nagas are living under Assam out of question, baseless and unwarranted issue. To speak the truth that those Naga tribes are living in their own ancestral land.
In view of the historical facts stated above, it is high time GOI to amalgamate all the Naga inhabited areas under one administrative unit to avoid further unnecessary bloodshed.
