Rengma orgs condemn ‘act of desecration’

Graves of victims found vandalised on February 1

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 1 (MExN): The Rengma Students Union Dimapur (RSUD) and the Rengma Youth Organisation Dimapur (RYOD) has condemned the act of vandalism at the graves of late Tegile Nyenthang Rengma and late Helole Sebii Rengma, who fell victim to the violence in the Rengma Hills in December, 2013. The remains of the two women were buried at Lahorijan. On February 1, the graves were found vandalised.

Terming it as deliberate and a “vicious” act of “desecration”, the two organisations said that the episode has hurt the sentiment of the Rengma community. “The very fact that the bodies could not be given a decent burial at their ancestral village due to the tense situation in the Rengma Hills was a painful episode; therefore the vandalism around the graves has deeply hurt the Rengma community for which the students and the youth organisations shall not be held responsible for any untoward incidents in future,” stated a joint statement from the two organisations. The statement further urged the Assam Police and the administration to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
