
Tseminyu, March 22 (MExN): The Rengma Selo Zi (Youth Organization) today hoisted the Naga national flag at Parashen, the place where the “Naga Independent Flag” of the then newly formed Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) was first hoisted on March 22, 1956.
A press release from Press and Media Cell, RSZ said that when the Naga constitution/Yehzabo was passed by the NNC on January 14, 1956, Nagas’ “long march for freedom from India” intensified in all the Naga inhabited areas, including Rengma country. “Subsequently, the plan for hoisting of Naga Independent Flag came into being thus Ciethu near Chiephobozo under Kohima district was surveyed but Indian Army foiled the attempt and consequently AZ Phizo along with his comrades, notably Whenha Rengma, decided to hoist the First Naga Independent flag at Parashen on 22nd March 1956,” it recollected.
RSZ further noted that it was at Parashen on March 22, 1956, the first Tatar Hoho was held and the NNC, representing the Naga Hill District and Hongking Government, representing the free Nagas, “freely and willingly merged into a single entity known as the Federal Republic of Nagaland and in addition established the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN).”
Consequent upon this development, the Naga Safeguard was changed into Naga Home Guard with General Thungdi Chang as the Commander-in-Chief, it added. Gen. Thungdi Chang was the one who hoisted the flag at Parashen on March 22, 1956 in the presence of AZ Phizo and other Naga patriots, it was informed.
