KOHIMA, OCTOBER 24 (MExN): Kekhrienguzo Christopher Ringa, a celebrated former footballer and drummer for the band Cotton County, passed away on October 22 in Kohima at the age of 48 after a sudden illness.
His last rites were conducted by Rev. Fr. Dominic Rau, assistant priest of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Kohima Town, on Wednesday at New Market Colony.
Kekhrienguzo was widely recognized for his talent on the football field, known for his quick thinking and ability to convert small chances into goals. As an incisive striker, he participated in numerous major tournaments and was instrumental in winning championships that brought pride to Nagaland and the New Market Team.
In a condolence message, the New Market Sports Committee highlighted his memorable achievements, including winning the North East Sports Festival Championship in Gangtok, Sikkim, and representing Nagaland in the Centre of Excellence All India Trials at Sainik School Golpara, Assam. "His death has left the football fraternity in anguish and despair," the message stated, expressing solidarity with his family during this difficult time.
Khrieketoulie Metha, president of the New Market Youth Organisation (NMYO), also extended his condolences, describing Kekhrienguzo as "a prominent youth member whose dedication and invaluable contributions to NMYO cannot be expressed in words."
In addition to his football career, Kekhrienguzo was a talented musician, known for his exceptional drumming skills. He played with several prominent bands in the state, including the popular Methaneilie Jütakhrie, and served as the standing drummer for Cotton County until his passing.
Tributes and condolences have poured in from various organizations, including the Kohima District Football Association, Chesezu Welfare Association, and others, honoring his legacy in both sports and music.
