Suspension bridges to be constructed at 4th Mile, Nagarjan
Kohima, August 4 (MExN): Chief Minister TR Zeliang has directed the National Highways, BRO, R&B and allied departments, and contractors to commence road renovation and construction of bridges around Dimapur and Kohima with immediate effect, according to a press release from Chief Minister’s Office. The directive was issued at a Coordination Committee Meeting that the CM convened at his official chamber on August 3.
The meeting decided to carry out “temporary immediate repair of roads” in Dimapur and Kohima. The stretches of roads to be repaired in Dimapur are: Purana Bazar to 3rd Mile; Green Park to Thahekhu; Golaghat junction to Tragopan junction and upto DC Court, Dimapur; Railway Station flyover to Supermarket; Full Nagarjan to 3rd Mile; Tragopan junction to Burma Camp traffic point. The drainage from Purana Bazar will also be cleared by the BRO from August 5 to 7.
The Nodal Authority for supervising and coordinating the repair work will be CE, PWD (R&B). He will deploy necessary manpower under a Superintendent Engineer for execution and supervision of the repair works. He will also be in charge of setting up ‘staging area’ from August 4 to 9 at the Agri. Expo site to house workers and machinery, who will be involved in the emergency repair works. For National Highway, CE, PWD (NH) will deploy the manpower.
Two Suspension Bridges will also be constructed at 4th Mile and Nagarjan under the NSDMA in coordination with DDMA, Dimapur. The design of the suspension bridge developed by the PWD (R&B) will be given to the NSDMA, which will procure the material for the bridges either from Guwahati or Kolkata. The work will be implemented departmentally in collaboration with the DDMA, Dimapur. For immediate passage of light vehicles, a temporary bamboo bridge will be constructed by the NSDMA at 4th Mile over the Chathe River, the release added.
Meanwhile, it was informed that a request has been made to the Army for construction of bridge over Chathe River at 4th Mile as an emergency measure. The matter is under process, the CMO said.
The Chief Minister and Minster PWD (R&B) also directed that construction of new bridges at 4th Mile and Nagarjan should commence immediately. The contractor assured that construction of the bridges will be completed by June, 2018, according to the release.
The meeting also decided that CE, PWD (NH) will conduct a safety audit of the New Dhansiri Bridge through a technical team comprising engineers from PWD, NHIDCL and BRO.
In Kohima, CE, PWD (R&B) will repair the road in Kohima stretching from the Secretariat road to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and in other parts of Kohima Town which have been badly damaged by the monsoon. The CE, PWD (R&B) will submit estimates for the works by August 5 and the works will be completed by August 13. “Since the works are emergent in nature, they shall be taken up departmentally, the cost of which will be borne under ‘Disaster Management immediate restorative work damaged by extreme rainfall’,” the release added. The estimate will be submitted to NSDMA, Home Department by the Chief Engineer PWD (R&B).
The CMO release said that the operational cost for the repair works in Dimapur, the cost for purchase of materials and the repair cost for the works to be undertaken by the PWD will be borne under additional fund to be provided by the State Finance Department on the basis of detailed estimates prepared and furnished by PWD by August 5, and the works will be executed departmentally.
The meeting also resolved that a comprehensive memorandum for relief will be prepared by SDMA at the earliest for damages caused by 2017 monsoon across the State. The same will be submitted to the Government of India for assistance under NDRF.
