Nagaland’s Planning & Co-Ordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Minister, Neiba Kronu today released 2-volume report of ‘Geospatial Water Resource Map of Nagaland’ here.

This project was funded by North Eastern Council (NEC) titled “conducting a detailed survey on water resource potential in Nagaland, including preparation of report on potential of river,” undertaken by Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre under Planning & Coordination Department.

The 2-volume of report prepared for the project “demonstrate the application of space technology and use of remote sensing and GIS techniques in the implementation of the project.”

The project had been carried out with thorough research and intensive field survey with special emphasis on surface water resource management and development of Hydro-Electric Power (HEP) generation potential for the state of Nagaland.

The report contain mapping of the entire river system, drainage network, the drainage pattern and preparation of large scale Watershed delineation and morphometric analysis of the 22 watershed and the Survey and Assessment of surface water runoff/discharge in more than 100 different location across the state.

Report shall provide impulsion in development of HEP: Kronu

Speaking on the occasion, Kronu encouraged the Centre to take up more of such programme in future, taking advantage of technology and meeting the challenges faced by the state.

He stated that the report shall provide impulsion in the development of HEP, Irrigation and drinking water availability as well as for monitoring of water quality and quantity in the state.

Kronu informed that, state line departments such as Water Resource, Power, New and Renewable Energy, Land Resources, PHED and Disaster Management, etc. will greatly benefit from generated geospatial database as it will provide them the tools to plan with more precision and accuracy in the area of water resource programmes and schemes.

“When water is there everything is there,” the Minister said. He however said that everything becomes flop when one does not know how to make the best use of water resource.

Kronu also stressed on the need to scale up roads infrastructure and power generation, maintaining that when such things are in the right order, other things will slowly catch up.’’

Call to use database for all round sustainable development
Stating that the report gave an overview of water resource potential of the state and application of remote sensing in water resources of Nagaland, Nagaland’s additional chief secretary and development commissioner Sentiyanger Imchen penned in foreword “I hope this report would prove useful to the different line departments in the state.”

Imchen also urged all the stakeholders to use the geospatial database generated from this project for all round sustainable development of the state.

In preface, Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre project director Er Mhathung Kithan penned that as an outcome of this document report- Geospatial water resource map of Nagaland, “It is expected to see a convergence of water resources experts of academia, industry, research institutions and other related disciplines to brainstorm and deliberate on various aspects of sustainable water management, so that we can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to satisfy their own water demands.”

Er Kithan stated that the Nagaland GIS and Remote Sensing Centre will also be developing a digital data infrastructure platform that can be used for achieving, storing, validation, analysis, updation, retrieval and dissemination of digital information with respect to the water resources in the state.

Earlier, Chubawati, senior analyst Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre made a power point presentation on the project. Nosazol Charles, Additional Development Commissioner (Planning & Coordination) also spoke at the function.

National Highways and Treasuries & Account Advisor Dr Longrineken and Water Resources Advisor Namri Nchang also present at the function.
