Retired officer? Keep the vehicle!

Dimapur, Aug 14 (MExN): About eight retired officers from the department of Transport are still retaining their government-issue vehicles. The department informed of this in response to details demanded under RTI by a citizen.

One Chubatangit had sought information under relevant provisions of the Right to Information Act, over unauthorized use of government vehicles by retired officers as well as for condemnation of government vehicles allotted to VVIPs, heads of departments and officers.  The transport department responded to the citizen’s queries by disclosing that a vehicle is retained by a retired officer not more than one month, and is under his risk. Also, eight retired officers were found to have retained government vehicles, previously entitled to them while in service.

The citizen urged the concern authority to initiate appropriate necessary action against the erring retired officer since they are illegally retaining the vehicles for personal interest and at the expense of the state exchequer.

In regard to condemnation of vehicles, there is a criterion to be fulfilled: The vehicle must be minimum eight years old with a mileage of 1. 50 lakhs. The vehicles are to be condemned through the transport department, and disposed off with a disposal value of 1/7th of the book value of the vehicle.
