Many vehicles loaded with Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) illegally enter Nagaland everyday despite police personnel manning the check gate. One obvious reason is that, the smuggler(s) bribe the personnel in many instances. We need to appreciate the Assam Rifle personnel for showing sincerity in implement Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act.
For Nagas, fight against the liquor is like a “Holy War” as we declared our state NAGALAND as “Dry State” and “for Christ.”
However, we fail to uphold our pledge (i.e. NLTP Act). It is indeed remarkable that Non-Christians are assisting us to achieve our pledge (to prohibit liquor). In true sense, it should be us not them to fight against liquor in our state and it is disgraceful that we are assist by non-Christian who take no pledge against liquor. It’s high time to retrospect our stand against liquor and implementation of NLTP Act in word and in spirit.
Vehicles load of liquor are allow to crossover police check gate, WHY? Now, the most profitable place in Nagaland is the police check gate. Someone posted in the Facebook that, Police Check Gate is like an ATM (where we transact money). If we don’t wake up and ring the bell now, the situation will go from bad to worse. Who knows, in near future they will charge money even to private vehicle(s) and to the passenger(s) for passing the check gate.
NGOs have moral right to voice against the police/excise personnel manning the check gate, when vehicles loads of liquor are intercepted and seized by different central Para-military force like Assam Riffle, CRPF, etc, after the smuggler(s) successfully (after giving bribe to the personnel manning check gate) enter Nagaland. I opined that NGOs have the right to demand the government to take stern action against those personnel.
It is surprising that the police personnel are contending to manned check gate. They bribe their superior officer by presenting gifts (in cash or in kind) in order to depute him/her to the check gate. In many instance, his/her intention to manned check gate is not in good spirit but to accept bribe or extort money from liquor and drugs smuggler for their safe access/ entry. At the end of the day the personnel share the bucks they collect as bribe or from extortion as extra pocket money cheerfully.
