Satoi Range Students’ Union holds 42nd Biennial General Conference
Zunheboto, January 8 (MExN): The Satoi Range Students’ Union (SRSU) held its 42nd Biennial General Conference at Ikiye Village from January 4 to 6 under the theme ‘Retrospectively marching forward’.
On day one, Khetoholi Yeptho, Public Prosecutor, Zunheboto was the speaker. She emphasized that every village institution, students leader, educated person, government employee, public leader and right thinking citizen should have the courage to speak and voice out for right of the public, while adding that human rights guarantee right to life, freedom of thought and expression and equal treatment in the eye of the law.
A press release from Nikato T Aye, President and Homugha Achumi, General Secretary of SRSU further informed that the speaker stated that with the progress of socio-economic development, legal right and awareness is the need of the hour and that the citizens should know their rights and responsibility.
Pointing out the importance of Right to Information (RTI), the Public Prosecutor reminded that every citizen can seek information by filing an application at any government establishment under the RTI Act and check corruption and misuse of power by certain individuals and institutions to promote transparency, accountability and ensure that the public is not deprived of their rights. It is the responsibility of the government agencies to furnish the information sought, she added.
On the second day of the conference, G. Kaito Aye, MLA from 36 A/C Satakha attended the event as chief guest. Stating that students should be humble and sincere, he urged to start with humble beginning and pay respect to elders. The MLA also pointed out that the constituency needs more improvement in roads. Better infrastructure, he stated, can only be attained through unity and good coordination.
Zheito Chophy, former President, All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) and former President, All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) graced the occasion as guest of honour on January 6, the last day of the event. Zheito urged the students to be humble, sincere, God fearing and seek heavenly wisdom and put best efforts to succeed in their academic career.
As an advisor of All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK), he highlighted the recent ‘Doing Right Mission’. The prime objective of the mission, he said, is also to check corruption in central, state projects, schemes allotted by the government for construction of roads, buildings and other infrastructures for the public. He asserted that funds allotted should reach the public and not be misused.
Maintaining that proper implementation of the schemes, projects is required for development in the area, he stated that fraudulent withdrawal of public fund without carrying out the civil works should not be allowed, the press release said.
In this regard, he urged upon every citizen, students’ union to check the implementation of schemes, projects, and contracts etc. in their respective village along with the All Sumi Students’ Union to ensure quality works and also accountability and transparency for the whole system in the area.
Meanwhile, he said that contract works may be given to the contractors through open tender by the authorized MLA; however, it is the duty of the students’ unions, public leaders to cooperate and ensure quality works in their areas. On the opening day of the session, Ninoto Awomi, President, All Sumi Students’ Union also graced the occasion as speaker.
SRSU also elected its new office bearers for the tenure 2017 led by Nikato T Awomi as President and Homugha Achumi as General Secretary during the general conference.
