Rights group asserts ‘right to self-determination’

DIMAPUR, DEC 20 (MExN): Delegates who gathered at the Deputy Speaker Hall, Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi under the auspices of the Zomi Human Rights Foundation, Delhi Cell, after having deliberated upon the problems and prospects of marginalised Hill People of Manipur, affirmed to and called upon the government, NGOs, civil societies and all right-thinking citizens to recognise, acknowledge, respect and address ten points which were discussed.

Stating that self-determination is an inviolable and inalienable right of all peoples which encompass the right to self-governance within or without the state, a release said that the denial of these rights invariably constitutes serious human rights violation. Serious concern was also raised over the continuation of the death of innocent civilians in the interior areas of Manipur hills while the Army and armed groups persist with the blame game.

“The Union and Manipur State government adopted a callous attitude and sheer indifference towards the genuine demand for sanitization of the landmine-affected areas. We call upon them once again, to acknowledge the immense suffering subjected to the hill people of Manipur due to their flawed and discriminatory policies at least now on and take immediate remedial course,” the release said. It further termed as condemnable the Manipur government’s policy of reneging on its undertaking to sanitise the hill areas and its deliberate hijacking of the logical process of extending the right to self-determination to the hill areas of Manipur.
