Regional Institute of Medical Sciences commemorated the 47th Foundation Day at Imphal today with Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla as guest speaker.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor expressed concerns for the need to upgrade equipments at the institute and said, “The equipment in Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Imphal needs to be upgraded to that of the All India Medical Science (AIMS) level.”
She also expressed her delight to be a part of the foundation day of "such premier institution" which was established in 1972 jointly by Northeastern states and the Government of Manipur. She stated that a "foundation day remains very significant to those associated with it". She also said that RIMS has been delivering quality medical services to the whole of North Eastern states except Assam. "Unfortunately, much more needs to be done in terms of equipment and other infrastructures", she added.
The Governor then said that she had already informed the Union Minister of Health about the problems faced by RIMS. She said she had requested for Union minister for up gradation and development of infrastructures of the institute.
During the celebration, the meritorious students of post graduate students and BDS were felicitated.
Meanwhile, speaking on the occasion, Dr A Santa Singh, Director of RIMS, said that a helicopter will be stationed at RIMS and will be utilized to cater the needs of patients in far flung areas in the state. He also said the cost of CT Scan, MRI, X- Ray have been reduced.
RIMS for not only caters to health care but also for producing good medical students in under graduates and post graduate courses. More than three thousand students have already graduated from this Institute. A nursing college was also set up in 2009. Super specialty courses in Urology and Plastic Surgery have been started.
The foundation day celebration was attended by Dr K Mani Singh, former Additional Professor of Surgery, RIMS and Dr RK Sanajaoba Singh, former Sr Registrar of Anesthesiology, RIMS as guests of honour.
