RING THE BELL: Rising awareness for inclusive education

‘All children are welcome to school including children with a disability’

Kohima, March 22 (MExN): ‘Ring the Bell’ campaign with the slogan ‘All children are welcome to school including children with a disability’ was organised by RAISE-NE and Cherry Blossoms School, Kohima, at GMS Aradura on March 21.  

This campaign was initiated to raise awareness for inclusive education in North-east, stated a press release receive here.  

In ‘Ring the Bell‘ the school children will make lots of noise together for one minute in their schoolyard with bells and other instruments etc. ‘Loud’ message to all who can hear especially the politicians and policy makers, to take action in promoting inclusive education and also to raise awareness among all.  

RAISE North East is a project started in the year 2016, to complement the flagship program of Sarva Siskha Abhiyan (SSA). RAISE-NE has 15 partners in the North-East in 5 states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland and Manipur, who will work directly with the SSA of the respective five states, who aims to make 75 SSA school completely inclusive by 2020. The government officials shall help the schools with special educators.  

During the programme, a short introduction was delivered by Purnima kayina, Headmistress, Cherry Blossoms School, who gave an insight about what the ‘Ring the Bell’ Campaign. Visienuo, Key Teacher under RAISE-NE spoke on the occasion and gave an enlightening insight about ‘Inclusive Education’.  

Disability Commissioner of Nagaland, Dr. Atha Vizol, spoke about how recognition of children with Disability is a must for our society and how we can all come together to embrace all children and encourage them for their right to education. Vizol, gave the statistics numbers on funds being received by Persons with Disabilities (PwD).  

Apparently there is 1.5 percent of disable people from the total population under which 2000 PwDs- under monthly pension; 208 – Scholarship; 1300 – Blind pension; 1276 – Scholarship for the Disable Children going to school; 496 – Soft loan through NFDC.  

The GMS Aradura Head Teacher, Ganga Thapa, VEC Chairman Khrieketoulie the GMS school teachers, GMS school students, Cherry Blossoms School students, along with two SSA teachers and, were also present on this occasion.
