CHIEF MINISTER Neiphiu Rio today asserted that the revival of Tuli Pulp and Paper Mill, one of the commitments made by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, needs to be expedited.

“The paper mill, when in full production, would facilitate generation of a large number of employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly,” Rio told a “Workshop on Generation of 25,000 employment opportunities and the empowerment of Women through Self-Help Group” here at ATI Hall.

Large number of local people would be engaged in the cultivation and supply of bamboos, creating huge employment opportunities for our farmers, Rio said adding, “This is the only central sector PSU in the State, and it should not be allowed to wither away due to lack of funds.”

“We can also create a number of jobs through promotion and development of bamboo as a resource and as an enterprise”, Rio said.

Rio also stressed the need for taking up capacity and skill enhancing programmes, which will sharpen the competitive edge of our youth and enable them to seek employment outside the region and even abroad.

Rio said the State is severely handicapped by the absence of any National or Regional level institute in Nagaland as a result the state had to send the students to various parts of the country for capacity building involving huge expenditure and inconvenience.

“With our skills in speaking English and the Naga spirit of adventure, it is my dream that our youth will fan out all over the world to seize various employment opportunities,” Rio said.

Referring to empowerment of women, Rio exuded confidence that several path breaking programmes and action plans to further empower women would be framed during the course of the workshop.
