Rio stresses on Naga unity

Dimapur, October 18 (MExN): The 47th NSUD Nite cum freshers meet was celebrated on October 16 at Shah Auditorium, Delhi with the theme ‘Visualising Naganess: change and continuity’, displaying the three domains of Naga Culture; Music, Dance, and Fashion. 

Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland graced the ceremony as the chief guest. Rio in his speech stressed that Naga issue and the position of Naga unity today was his utmost priority and he encouraged the youth to come together as one. He added that the Nagas can come out of the cocoon only when we are united as one, and so this should initially start from the student level. C. M. Chang, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha was the guest of honour. Doshehe Y. Sema, Minister Power and Election, Kuzholuzo, Minister Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Chumben Murry, Minister Agriculture and many other invitees also attended the function. 

The first session started with the Naga traditional song by the Zeliangrong Students’ Union Delhi. Joshua Thong Seb, President, NSUD gave the presidential speech. NSUD Executives presented a medley of Naga traditional dance which comprised of various dance steps from the Naga tribal units of NSUD. The Nagas who are known for the rich tradition and culture over the ages made it more convincing with the indigenous fashion parade which was showcase by the Naga tribes. “Each couple presented the traditional attire of their respective tribe and the uniqueness we have,” Boveio Poukai Duo, General Secretary NSUD stated in a press release. For selection of Mr. and Miss Freshers, each tribal unit of NSUD presented their own Miss and Mr fresher 2010 for the contest. Atohito Zhimo and Chungni Ruwndar were crowned the NSUD Mr & Miss Fresher 2010. Paveine Paulina presented speech on behalf of all the freshers. The first session ended with the vote of thanks from the Social and Cultural Secretary Shelmi Sankhil.

The second session became livelier with the live performance by gospel rock band Dementia, winner of Red Ribbon Super Star Band. The programme was witnessed by the various students representatives of All Bodo Students’ Union Delhi, Dimasa Students Union Delhi, Garo Students’ Union Delhi, Kuki Students’ Organisation Delhi, Manipur Students Association Delhi, Sikkim Students Union Delhi and from different parts of India and abroad.

NSUD was established in 1963 and it is the apex body of all the Naga students in Delhi with the total population of 22,000 from four states of North-East India and Myanmar. Ever since its formation, the Union has undertaken various projects and programme for the welfare of the students’ community. It also involves and participates in many social activities for the cause of Nagas as a whole, all throughout the year.
