RNTCP DOTS training conducted at Dimapur

Dimapur, September 22 (DIPR): The Department of Health & family Welfare has organized two day training for Medical Officer under Dimapur District on Revised National Tuberculosis Control programme (RNTCP) Directly Observed Treatment (DOTS)- Plus from September 22 & 23, 2011 at Circuit House Dimapur.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dimapur, Dr. Sukhato A. Sema in his welcome speech said that the main objective of organizing the training programme for the officers is to sensitized key information on the emergence of drug- resistant TB, its public health impact, experience gained in patient management, and for addressing drug resistance within RNTCP. He pointed out that it has been acknowledged that good treatment is a pre-requisite to prevention of emergence of resistance. RNTCP recognizes that implementation of good quality DOTS programme is the first priority for TB control in the country.
He also said that 50% on female infertility is caused by TB to prevent and reduce this problem special attention needs to be given by providing free medicine, free treatment and DOTS. CMO also said Dimapur district has formed scientific team in the field of HIV/TB research where the team is collecting sputum and blood for investigation and test, the effected patient are being provides free medical test and DOTS. He called upon the officers who had attended the training programme to strengthen the RNCTP in the district and also appealed that every HIV/ TB patient should be benefited through the services provided by the department and to deliver the best health services to the people of district to become HIV/TB free district.
State TB Officer, Dr. K.T. Lotha, on his brief address on RNTCP informed that the project was launched in the State on 1st December 2002 and for Dimapur in the year 2004, RNCTP are being established in all the 11 districts and there are 46 Designated Microscopic centers in the State, there are 25,000 registered TB patient in the State since inception, and the cure detection rate (CDR) is 70% and Cure rate (CR) is 85% which is above the national target rate. He also lamented that there are some districts like Longleng, Phek and Peren where RNCTP projects are not performing up to the mark, and added that Dimapur district is being one of the best RNTCP implementing district in the State in spite of high population and further said that it is due to the collective efforts of the officers and the subordinates.
He also said that the national scenario on co effected HIV/TB rate stood at 5-6 % and the Nagaland State has 9 -10% because of the high prevalence rate, the State has established intensify voluntary and testing counseling on HIV/ TB centre in all the districts to implement the basic DOTS and Multi- Drugs resistant TB which includes free treatment, Investigation, Medical test and the treatment period is 24 to 27 months which amounting to one lakh per patient.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Khelito Zhimomi. The resource persons for the programme include Dr. K.T. Lotha (State TB Officer), Dr, Shankar G Dapkekar (WHO), Dr Apichetla (MO/TC) and Dr. Khelito Zhimomi (District TB Officer).
