Against the backdrop of increasing vehicular traffic and the recent fire tender vehicle mishap at Lower Chandmari, Kohima, the Municipal Affairs Department in collaboration with the Lower Chandmari Panchayat and Lower Chandmari Youth Organisation took the initiative to widen the road turning at the tri-junction.

The road widening exercise is being undertaken to increase visibility for vehicles while making turns and reduce the sharp turn which may cause serious accidents. It has been reported that accidents occur annually in the sharp turning of the junction.

“Every now and then accident happens. This has become a big problem,” said Toshimanen Ozukum, Head of Department of the Municipal Affairs who has initiated the welfare exercise along with the assistance of Lower Chandmari Gaonburas and Panchayat executives which is also expected to ease traffic congestions at the tri- junction. It may be mentioned that the tri- junction is a crowded location where school children and office goers wait for their respective buses to attend schools and offices.

The widening of road is also expected to make it easier for school and office buses to make turns. The junction also serves as the taxi stand for the citizens of the colony. The road from Chandmari to Midlane, connecting the National highway at War Cemetery, is one of the busiest roads in Kohima town where commuters from different colonies use the road for attending offices, school, churches, etc.
