Roaring engines readies for Horse Power challenge

Kohima | June 9 : One of the small clubs with big achievements would definitely be the Nagaland Adventure Club (NAC). A club formed in April 2010 with the purpose of bringing adventure sports to Nagaland.  Initiated by a small group of like-minded and determined young pioneers the club was formed in April 2010. NAC aims to introduce and encourage ‘unconventional’ sports and related activities in our state. ‘Unconventional’ being defined as ‘those sports to which the general populace has not had any or much exposure’ such as mountain climbing & biking, gliding, off-road racing, motocross and other similar exciting sports.
Young and determined—Nagaland Adventure Club looks to unconventional sports
Though still in its nascent stage, the NAC has achieved in leaps and bounds. The NAC organized the ‘Horse Power Challenge in 2010. The tremendous success of this event gave the club a taste of triumph towards fulfilling its primary goal. The event featured a motocross & 4x4 off-road competition which are both Extreme Sports. This two day event held on the 16th & 17th of July at Chaca, Kohima attracted competitors even from Meghalaya and Assam. In motocross segment there were 14 competitors – 4 each from Assam and Meghalaya, the rest were from Nagaland - and in 4x4 off-road segment 11 teams participated including one team representing Meghalaya.
It is estimated that over 3000 spectators witnessed the event which of course was well beyond the expectations of the NAC. In fact this event generated so much interest that there have been an increasing number of inquiries and requests for such similar events. The NAC also participated in the Hornbill International Rally 2010 and came out with flying colors. The members were the champions in both cars and bikes section and also won the best decorated car&bike for the third consecutive year. The team NAC was also adjudged the ‘Best Institution’ during the event.
Perhaps the boldest step for NAC so far, was participating in one of the toughest and most extreme rally in the world, the Raid-de-Himalaya. In 2010 the club set up a team with Along Aier, a known veteran name for winning several positions in the said rally. Unfortunately that particular year, the race couldn’t be completed owing to mechanical problems. Notwithstanding the disappointment, the NAC teamed up with Along Aier again to participate in the Indo-Bhutan Rally 2011, held in March 2011. This move paid off and the NAC secured the second position.
The NAC has also been trying to promote tourism through its varied activities. In 2010 during the Hornbill festival, the club teamed up with the Nagaland Motorcycle Club (A Royal Enfield riders club) and hosted 22 tourist bikers at a private farm called ‘Ziechazou’, P.Khel Kohima. The club is looking forward to accommodating another 50 bikers or so this year.
The NAC has organized another event this year which will be called, ‘The 2nd HORSEPOWER CHALLENGE 2011’to be held on the 14th July. The event promises the roar of engines and the buzz of bikes right in the Kohima local ground. The competition will include both four and two wheelers. The club also intends to team up with ‘Gallery Monet’ to organize a photo competition.
The president of NAC, Paul Rutsa speaking to the Morung Express stated that the club looks forward to assistance and support from all sport lovers. Stating that the club being relatively new always has to struggle for sponsorships, he appealed to all well wishers to support and encourage them in the days to come. He expressed gratitude to those individuals and organizations that have, in the past, come to help the club with no profit agendas. The president also specially mentioned the support and encouragement received from the Governor of Nagaland when all other quarters turned a blind eye.
