‘Role played by women in agriculture significant’

ATMA Kohima: Women Farmer’s Day (Mahila Kisan Diwas) was organized by ATMA Kohima on October 15 at ATMA conference hall, Kohima. Seyievono, SDAO Chiephobozou in her keynote address encouraged the women farmers that they can be as productive as the male farmers but at the same time women farmers experienced inequality in wages, deprive from ownership of lands. She appraised that the role of women in farming is recognized by the government and various programmes and policies for women has been introduced.  

Rokoshuno Angela, Dy. PD (ATMA), Kohima in a press note stated that success stories were shared by Posanu Mekro on SRI, Neilhouvo on Sericulture, Rusile Khing shared on the success of Ngvu Logwa (FIG), Mesechu Kiewhuo shared her success on tea plantation, tea making process and its benefits and Neizonuo, shared her success on integrated farming. Short video clips on dish wash gel making, local detergent preparation in local dialect and documentation on tea plantation was shown to the participants.  

Altogether 32 women farmers from various blocks and ATMA functionaries attended the programme.  

KVK Kohima: The Mahila Kisan Diwas was organized at Kigwema village on October 15 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kohima. Observing the divas, Longma Yanger, (ACTO) KVK Kohima highlighted the significant role played by women in agriculture and their contribution towards household food security and self sufficiency. He also encouraged the women folks to progress a little further by adopting new technologies for better production and economic growth.  

A press release issued by Dr. V. Akashe Zhimomi, Sr Scientist & Head KVK Kohima said that Keviyanuo Zhasa (TO) emphasized about mushroom cultivation, pulses production which could earn extra revenue during winter season after harvest of paddy. The programme was attended by 42 farm women of Kigwema Village. Later, serrated sickle for paddy harvesting were also distributed.  

ICAR-NRC on Mithun: ICAR-NRC on Mithun celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas at its Medziphema campus. Women from different villages of Dimapur district who are directly involved in farming activities were invited in the day-long program.  

The important issues related to cultivation, harvesting, soil preparation, seed availability, storage and animal husbandry were discussed. The various events like quiz, drawing competition and a group discussion on “Reducing drudgery of women in Agriculture” were organized.  

A total of 26 women farmers participated in the programme. The winners were awarded and encouraged. The programme was supported by all the scientists and staff members of ICAR-NRC on Mithun.  

KVK Dimapur: One day programme was organised by KVK Dimapur, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema to recognize the contribution of women famers as Mahila Kisan Diwas on October 15, where Dr. Aleminla Ao, Professor, Department of Entomology SASRD, Nagaland Univeristy Medziphema was special guest.  

The programme started with the Welcome address by Dr Lohit Kumar Baishya Joint Director In-charge. He appealed the women farmers to sustain the farming and other activities and develop themselves up to the level of entrepreneur to generate the income from farming and other allied activities.  

Dr. Aleminla Ao, in her brief remark told the participants that 80% field operations are done by women farmers. Women are working for house hold jobs as well agricultural operations. She told that we play an important role in society, let us feed our children healthy food requested the other women farmers to contribute towards nutritional securities being mothers.  

Five successful women farmers shared their success stories and later they were felicitated. A total of 60 women farmer participated in the programme.  

ATMA Mon: The women farmers of Mon celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas-2018 at Mon Town on October 15 organised by Agricultural Technology Management Agency Mon.  

The programme was inaugurated by Eyongol Natso, Project Director, ATMA Mon. Speaking at the programme, the Project Director shared on how women have always been the driving force in farming and stressed on the need of formation of farmer interest groups, and food security groups,. The farmers were also sensitized on the ‘role of women farmer role in agriculture’ by N Subenthung Odyuo, Dy. Project Director, citing that more than 60% of farmers are women and they are backbone of Agriculture.  

Later in the Technical session, the farmers were trained on Production Technology of Mushroom by Leiwang Konyak, ATM, Angjangyang. Leiwang stressed on the importance of Mushroom as off season crop. In training, the resource person Mhachamo Ngullie, discussed on the importance of book keeping and record maintenance for farmers groups for proper transparency and proper group management.
