Dimapur, October 24 (MExN): Rotary Club of Dimapur celebrated World Polio Day with a series of events on October 24. A special meeting was organized to commemorate World Polio Day at Rotary Centre, Midland, Dimapur with Dr Rebecca Y Sema, District Immunization officer, Dimapur District as guest speaker.
Dr Rebecca spoke about the various steps to make the world polio free by the world community till now. “Polio virus may again come back in all the countries if we do not continue with our efforts till we achieve zero cases. Polio is only a plane ride away,” she said.
She explained about the various surveillance systems put in place by the Government health authorities to detect and check polio. She informed about the new advances in other vaccine preventable diseases available free of cost apart from COVID. She requested Rotary Club members to be more proactive and vigilant in their efforts by giving a harder push to achieve zero polio cases.
Dr Rebecca was conferred Honorary Membership of Rotary Club of Dimapur for her efforts towards Polio eradication in Nagaland, stated a press release issued by Rtn Pradip Kumar Jain, Rotary Foundation Chair, Rotary Club of Dimapur.
Rtn RS Panesar, WG Meal Coordinator (World’s Greatest Meal Coordinator for North East India, organisation of Rotarians collecting funds for Polio Eradication by organizing special Meals) spoke about the efforts made by Rotary International throughout the world to achieve zero level polio cases in Pakistan & Afghanistan.
During the meeting, two polio survivors were given recognition and honour. Rtn Pradip Kumar Jain, Club’s Rotary Foundation Chair –funding body of Rotary for Polio Eradication, speaking on the occasion introduced the two polio survivors who became entrepreneurs despite being polio affected and stigma attached to polio victims. Bikram Jaiswal has been running a travel ticket booking agency for the last many years while Ratan Sharma is running an eatery and guest house in Dimapur.
Dr Rebecca Y Sema gave away the mementoes to the two entrepreneurs on behalf of the Club.
Rotary Club President Rtn Manish Jain informed the various other events planned for the day. Club has put ‘End Polio Now’ banners at the main traffic points in the city. All Rotary club members have taken a pledge to donate to the Polio Eradication Fund of the Rotary Foundation this month. Two polio survivors turned entrepreneurs also joined club members by pledging donations towards Rotary Foundation’s Polio Fund. Club Foundation Chair Rtn Pradip Kr Jain gave a talk radio on polio eradication on Community Radio station 90.8 Hills FM. A special write-up on polio eradication will be published in the local Newspaper to create public awareness.
