RPF Assault: Civil society groups demand ‘justice’

Dimapur, February 10 (MExN): The Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) and Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) today submitted a joint letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur to ensure justice for Senenlo Kath, who is “battling for his life” after he was allegedly assaulted by personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Dimapur Railway Station on February 3 night.

The victim, a former Finance Secretary of the Dimapur Naga Students Union and former General Secretary of the Rengma Students Union, is currently in coma and undergoing treatment at a Hospital in Guwahati.

In the joint letter, released to the media here, the two organizations questioned the integrity of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel for such blatant attack and demanded the reasons behind such “unrestrained and life threatening attack.”

Expressing their shock and disbelief over how easily the assaulter has been granted bail, they demanded the competent authority to “re-arrest” the culprit immediately.

This incident must be investigated thoroughly as more RPF personnel are suspected to be involved in the assault, the letter also stated.

Entrusted to enforce safety and security of the passengers, such action in its jurisdiction by RPF personnel at its own jurisdiction must be subjected to the highest public and administrative scrutiny, the organisations further pointed out.

Further informing that the victim is still in coma and battling for his life, the RSZ and RSU also demanded that the medical expenses and welfare of his family be borne by the RPF Authority as he was the sole bread earner of the family.

"We submit this to voice out the concerns and desires of the Rengmas in particular and the Nagas in general in solidarity for a positive affirmative action from you," the organisations further appealed to the DC in the joint letter appended by RSZ President Kenneth Kath and RSU President David Magh.
