Maligaon, April 19 (MExN): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recovered narcotics and smuggled/contraband goods worth Rs 26.52 lakh (approx) at various stations between April 12 and 18.
A press release from the NFR Chief PRO, Sabyasachi De informed that the RPF recovered heroin and brown sugar worth about Rs 14.96 lakhs and ganja valued about Rs 11.56 lakh during aforementioned period, during regular checks in trains and stations of NFR.
One person involved in transportation of contraband was also arrested, it said.
Delving further into these incidents, the release stated that on April 13, RPF and the Government Railway Police (GRP) team of Dibrugarh conducted checking on a Nagaland Intercity Express train at Dibrugarh Railway station.
The team found one suspected person with a backpack carrying six soap cases, which contained 78.34 grams of brown sugar worth approx Rs 4.96 lakh. The brown sugar was seized and the suspect was taken into custody and a case was registered, it informed.
In another incident on April 17, an RPF team train escorting a Ledo – Guwahati Intercity Express train had detected one unclaimed backpack.
On further inspection, five plastic soap cases containing some brown powdery substance which turned out to be heroin, weighing approx 62.19 grams worth about Rs 10 lakh, the release said.
On April 18 as well, CIB of RPF, Tinsukia recovered 17.7 kg of unclaimed ganja worth approx Rs 1.77 lakh while conducting a checking in a train from Mariani to New Tinsukia station. Moreover, between, April 12 to 18, RPF of NFR recovered ganja weighing about 100 kg worth about Rs 9.79 lakh while performing duty in various stations and different trains.
The RPF has detected over 488 cases of narcotics, smuggled and contraband goods worth more than Rs 15.63 crore with 124 persons arrested, involved in it during April 2021 to March 2022, the release added.
