Kohima, Dec 2 (MExN): Despite the Income Tax exemption in Nagaland, the State is still adding to its coffer a whopping Rs 13 crores (approx.) annually from Income Tax, said an official.

Talking to The Morung Express, Assistant Commissioner of Taxes, Chuba Ozukum revealed that annual revenue generated from Income Tax in 2004-05 is Rs 13 crores approximately, in spite of the tax exemption to the tribal population.

Under the Indian Constitution, Section 1/44 of Income Tax Act, schedule tribes are exempted from paying income tax. Income tax is liable to all professions in other parts of India. However, if this tax is imposed on Nagas, people will suffer, especially the well-to-do, opined the commissioner.

Chuba disclosed that so far no case of Income Tax evasion has been detected in either Kohima or Dimapur. He also said that the department along with police will immediately act by issuing warrant arrest, if such tax evasion cases are detected.
