Rs 488.60 lakh sericulture project in Nagaland under NEC

The state’s department of sericulture has been implementing sericulture project in the state of Nagaland under NEC funding with a project cost of Rs 488.60 lakh covering 400 acres of land for cultivation of Eri silkworm food plant in four districts - Mon, Mokokchung, Dimapur and Zunheboto.

Stating this in the Annual Administrative Report 2018-19 of Sericulture department, the report stated that the objective of the project is to develop sericulture sector in the state, economic upliftment of sericulture farmers and upgrading skills of rural women through practice of sericulture.

The project was launched during the year 2013-14. However, due to irregular funding, the project could be completed only during 2018-19 with the release of Rs 215.50 lakh being the last and final installment of central share.

The major activities covered under the project include: development of host plant nursery, raising of host plant cultivation, constriction of rearing shed and drainages. Rearing of silkworm for production of cocoons, strengthening of infrastructure for silkworm seed production and training programmes for skill upgradation, exposure trips to outside the state etc.
