Rs 7394 crores allocation for NEC

DIMAPUR, July 22 (MExN): Union Minister for Mines and Development of North Eastern Region, B K Handique has said that the Planning Commission has approved an allocation of Rs 7394 crores for the North Eastern Council (NEC) for the 11th Five Year Plan, a PIB release stated.

According to the PIB release, Handique, replying to a question in the Special Lok Sabha session on Tuesday, informed that ‘Clause 4 (a) (2) of the North Eastern Council Act, as amended in 2002, provides that while formulating the regional plans for the North Eastern area, the Council shall give priority to schemes and projects which will benefit two or more states, except in case of Sikkim where the Council can formulate state specific projects’. In a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister in October, 2006 it was decided that the NEC should concern itself only with the inter-state projects with wide ranging impact. In view of this, only the projects, including the road projects, with inter-state implications are considered by the NEC, stated the release.

Based on the proposals received from the NE states, the NEC has identified 56 road projects proposed to be taken up during the 11th Five Year Plan which also includes 8 projects in Arunachal Pradesh having inter-state/inter-district connectivity. The Planning Commission the release stated has accorded, in principle, approval for taking up 16 roads during the 11th Five Year Plan which include two inter-state road projects of Arunachal Pradesh. Longding-Nokjan road via Chatting Village and Tamin-Dolungmukh road are the projects which have been approved in Arunachal Pradesh, the release informed.
