RTI Week celebrated in Kohima and Mokokcung

Kohima, October 10 (MExN): As part of the celebration of RTI WEEK from October 5 to 12, the Kohima district observed the Right to Information week by organising a one-day awareness programme under the theme “RTI and Role of Citizens” on October 9 at Deputy Commissioner Office’s Conference Hall, Kohima. Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, PIO and ADC Kohima chaired the program and also gave the welcome address.  

Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS, First Apellate Authority and Deputy Commissioner, Kohima presented the keynote address. He pointed out the need for the government officials to meet frequently and discuss the new developments and updates which is being constantly added to the RTI structure. “Before RTI, information was a privilege and not a right and only some privileged sections of society could gain access to the information available.” he said. He encouraged the officials to maintain transparency in delegating their duties and further stressed on the importance of processing all RTI application within the stipulated timeline. Lastly he requested all the government officials present to utilize the services of the resource person present to clear all doubts regarding RTI and make the most out of the opportunity.  

Chubasanen, EAC Kohima and Sizin, EAC Kohima gave a detailed Powerpoint presentation on RTI and shed light on the finer details of the workings of the RTI Act.   According to DIPR report, Dr Hovithal Sothu, Deputy Director (Training) ATI, Nagaland, the resource person, explained the working of the RTI Act in detail, at the same time answered all the queries of the officials present clearing all doubts and confusions regarding the practical aspects of the RTI Act. He encouraged all the HODs, PIOs and APIOs to diligently perform their duties and process all RTI applications without any unnecessary delay. The Program concluded with the screening of a Documentary Film on RTI titled “My Right, My Voice” by DPRO office, Kohima. Longasen Lotha APIO & SDO (C) Sadar gave the vote of thanks.  

Mokokchung: Mokokchung District observed the RTI week on October 10 at ADC, Planning Conference Hall, Mokokchung. The programme was held under the theme “RTI and The Role of Citizens”. The programme was held under the chairmanship of Assistant Commissioner, Minga Sherpa, IAS (P) and Sentinaro Longchar Project Assistant (MDLSA) as resource person, a DIPR report informed. She shared with the house on the different aspects of the RTI and that RTI is a very important act which gives and empowers the people to get access to all important information on the activities of the government in the country.

W Manpai Phom, ADC & PIO Mokokchung who gave the introductory speech said that the government has empowered the people with huge power through RTI but he also reminded that this right should not be misused for the dark side of the society but should be used as a tool for transparency in the activities of the government. He also added that this right should be used judiciously. The welcome address was proposed by the chairperson, Minga Sherpa, IAS (P), Assistant Commissioner, Mokokchung and vote of thanks was delivered by SDO (C) (Judicial), Thungchanbemo Tungoe. The programme also included screening of RTI short films and distribution of leaflets on RTI.
