SABDA Institute of Tesol (Sitesol), Kohima in partnership with Actesol, Chiang Mai was launched on Friday at the Capital College, Kohima. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language. It is considered as ‘mother- certification’ for preparation to teach English to secondary language learners located both in native English speaking countries and countries of other majority languages.
Director of Sitesol, Veduzolu Kezo, said that with the advent of globalization, the number of cross cultural and intercultural interactions has increased. In this context, English has become the main medium not only for education but in all human interactions including the business and the corporate world. This has inevitably led to the need to learn English and thus, the demand of English teachers especially in the non-English speaking countries. However, it is a necessity for both native speakers and speakers of other language to have TESOL certificate as the requirement to teach English.
The North East India, especially Nagaland being a Christian majority state and with many young educated people, having the potential to provide human resource for this need, Sabda Institute of Tesol, Kohima was established, Kezo highlighted.
The institute aim to provide high quality training to qualified candidates, with the primary aim to contribute to the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The programme will cater to both theological and secular graduates who desire to serve as missionaries or to advance their profession in teaching English, she said. The first course (one month) will be held at Capital College, Kohima from August 21 to September 23, 2023.
The curriculum encompasses aspects of English language as well as theories of learning and teaching. It will provide the full certificate course meant for teaching any level of learners. The curriculum will be provided by the ASEAN Center for TESOL, Chiang Mai, Thailand having endorsement for quality standard by the Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.
