In an effort to preserve and promote its cultural and traditional heritage, Sangtam heritage village was inaugurated by T Seopi Sangtam, President, United Sangtam Likhüm Pumji (USLP) at Sanphure village on June 3 last.

Speaking at the inaugural, T Seopi Sangtam expressed gratitude to the public of Sanphure village for taking the initiative in maintaining the heritage site and thanked all those donors for generously contributing in cash and kind towards the construction of Sangtam heritage gate.

He said that heritage village in Sanphure was first of its kind to be officially launched under Sangtam jurisdiction. He called upon public of Sanphure and surrounding villages to maintain the spirit of unity and oneness.

Stressing on the importance of cultural preservation Seopi said the intangible heritage that the tribal population possesses including the traditional knowledge system contains many positive and productive elements that are really invaluable for the entire humanity. 

He stated that the art and culture of tribes should be given new orientation and respectability in the overall scheme of culture development. ‘The best traits of both the tradition and modernity should be synthesized for their sustainable development,’ he stated.

Seopi mentioned that ‘today the rich tradition, culture and heritage of the tribes manifest in its folklore, customs, jewellery and lifestyle which need to be preserve and documented.’

The programme was chaired by Sepikyu Sangtam, VCC Sanphure village and Sangtam heritage monolith dedicated by H Apise Sangtam, Secretary USBLA Kiphire.
