Sanitation awareness through women orgs

Mon, May 29 (DIPR): One day programme on Swachh Bharat Mission was held under the theme ‘Sanitation awareness campaign through women bodies’ with Dr. Chingjei Konyak, MBBS, MS General and Laparoscopic Surgeon as the resource person on May 28 at KNSK office here. The programme, organized by Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), was sponsored by PHED Mon Division.  

Speaking on the ‘Importance of good sanitation’, Dr. Chingjei Konyak said people are conscious and afraid of diseases but are careless of sanitation and hygiene which cause the ailments. 30% of diseases and ailments, he said, can be controlled if proper sanitation and hygiene is maintained and emphasized on the importance of proper disposal of waste and safe drinking water.  

He informed that various diseases and ailments like diarrhea, dysentery, urinary tract infection, and malaria are caused directly or indirectly due to improper sanitation and unhygienic lifestyle. He further stressed on the importance of washing hands as it reduces the risk of diarrhea by 40%. He especially emphasized on clean environment with proper maintenance of toilet, proper drainage, waste management system, and safe drinking water for healthy living. Khoiwang Wangsha, President, ENPO lamenting about unclean and unhygienic lifestyle in the district encouraged the KNSK members to learn and disseminate the importance of sanitation and hygienic lifestyle to the people back at home. He urged the women organization to take the initiatives in creating awareness on sanitation.  

Quoting ‘Cleanliness begins with a single person’, Lemya, Women Evangelist, KBBB urged the womenfolk to begin cleanliness at their respective home and teach their children the importance of such basic yet important things.  

Asserting that ignorance, uncivilized attitude, and negligence are the three factors for lack of proper sanitation, she appealed to the KNSK to be well aware of the subject and disseminate the information to the people. She said women organization is the right platform to deal with practical role on sanitation and healthy environment. Earlier, keynote address was proposed by Lomei Konyak, President, KNSK, while the programme was chaired by Angip, Joint Secretary, KNSK. Women representatives from wards/colonies of Mon Town participated in the programme.
