Sanitation Campaign launched at Burma Camp

Dimapur, June 23 (MExN): Taking a major step towards urban sanitation and solid waste management in the state, NGO- Group for Environment Management and Services (GEMS) supported by Department of Soil and Water Conservation launched “Sanitation Campaign” at Sangpangtu colony, United North Block – B, Burma Camp, Dimapur.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Imkongneken Ao, Director, Department of Soil and Water Conservation, urged the people for proper management of solid waste where majority of municipal (urban) solid waste (MSW) is disposed of in landfills (anaerobic composting).

This disposal system is reported to produce hazardous environmental impacts and only proper management of solid waste can protect the environment from such impacts by discouraging the practice of disposal of solid waste in landfills.

A pioneer in vermicomposting in the state and having vast years of experience on solid waste management, the Director stated that one of the technological options for treatment and disposal of organic solid wastes is vermicomposting.

A live demonstration of vermicomposting was presented by Pango, Soil Conservation Assistant. The NGO Group for Environment Management and Services also distributed organic smart bins and vermicompost manure to the colony.
