DIMAPUR, JANUARY 26 (MExN): Sano Vamuzo, founding president of the NMA, social worker and educationist was conferred the Padma Shri Award, the fourth highest civilian honour in India on Republic Day 2024. She received the award for her distinguished service in the field of social work in Nagaland.
Wife of former chief minister of Nagaland, Late Vamuzo, Sano founded the NMA with few concerned mothers in 1983 to fight social evils and uplift the status of women with the motto, “Human Integrity.” She is also a recipient of Navjyoti Award from Delhi Police Foundation for outstanding achievement in social services for the youth in recognition of NMA’s contribution to the society.
She also served as the first chairperson of the Nagaland State Commission for Women for two terms (2007-2010 & 2010-2013).
Prior to her foray into social work, Sano was an educator and taught in GHS, Kohima (1964), Baptist English School, Kohima (1966), started a Church School at Chozuba- Mission English School where she served as Headmistress 91967-71), was Headmistress of Baptist English School, (1972), taught in Baptist College, Kohima as a Lecturer (1982).
Congratulating Sano Vamuzo on being conferred the Padma Shri Award 2024 for her distinguished service in the field of Social work in Nagaland; the NMA defined her as a “Champion for women welfare and peace work and her passion towards uplifting community spirit.”
“A guide to the organization since 1984, we celebrate her life and commitment to serving the community,” the NMA stated.
