WOKHA, NOVEMBER 16 (MExN): The Sansad Khel Mahatsav for Wokha district, organised in collaboration with the District Administration and the District Sports Office, concluded on November 15 with participation from students across the district.
Delivering the inaugural address, Er CH R John Zeliang, Executive Director (Tech) and Head of Power, Doyang Hydro Power Station, NEEPCO/NTPC Ltd., highlighted the purpose and spirit of the event. He explained that Sansad Khel translates to “Parliament Sports Festival,” and said it is “a celebration of youth talent” being held nationwide, including in Wokha. “We may be a small district,” he said, “but we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with every Indian who believes in the power of sport to unite and uplift.”
Recalling his student days, Zeliang shared that he had represented Nagaland in New Delhi. Coming from “a humble village and a modest family,” he attributed his achievements to determination and physical fitness. “I went to Delhi in ’79 because I was fit,” he said. “If you are not fit, the country will not be fit. When we are fit, society, schools, and homes become fit.”
He outlined five pillars for aspiring athletes: health and rest through good nutrition and sleep; discipline through a structured routine; environment supported by clean surroundings and sound decisions; infrastructure such as quality fields and indoor facilities; and serious training through consistent practice. Zeliang urged participants to follow these principles, adding that commitment on the field contributes to success in life. He said the Mahatsav reflected the vision of a healthier and more united India as the country looks ahead to hosting the International Olympic Games in 2036.

Addressing the gathering, Nzano P Kikon, Deputy Chairperson, WTC, said that the Member of Parliament Pangnon Konyak, who was scheduled to attend, could not be present “due to unforeseen circumstances.” She conveyed “sincere apologies and heartfelt appreciation for the enthusiasm and spirit that have made this event possible.”
At the valedictory and prize distribution ceremony, Libemo Jami, Assistant Director, Youth Resource Services, thanked participants for the “overwhelming turnout” and said that witnessing a sports festival of this scale was a proud moment for the department and the Wokha community. Jami said the department would continue supporting promising athletes through scholarships, coaching and pathways for advancement. He added that sports offer employment opportunities and noted the significance of technology in competitive performance, stating that without adopting innovation, “we cannot hope to match the performance of other nations.” He said the programme contributed to the vision of a Vikshit Bharat.
Jonthungo Ezung, Councillor, WTC, delivered a brief address encouraging participants to view the Mahatsav as a step toward future achievements.
The event was organised by S Pangnon Konyak, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), in collaboration with the District Administration and the District Sports Office.
A total of 295 students from 16 schools across Wokha competed in various sporting disciplines. The District Sports Office provided overall assistance, the Chief Medical Officer ensured first-aid services, the District Education Officer supported coordination and logistics, and the District Public Relations Office handled media coverage and the public-address system. Winners received medals, cash prizes and certificates.
Karyakartas from various mandals, frontals, district office bearers and BJP councillors attended the programme. The organisers stated that the Sansad Khel Mahatsav demonstrated the value of community collaboration and the enthusiasm of the district’s youth.
