SAPO, WCMA condemn alleged torture of minor

Dimapur/Pfutsero, July 1 (MExN): The Secheku Area Public Organization (SAPO) and the Western Chakhesang Mothers' Association (WCMA), Dimapur, have expressed shock and strongly condemned the recent incident of the alleged torture of an 11-year-old girl by her foster mother in Pfutsero.

On July 1, the Phek Police informed that the foster mother, who is also the grandmother of the victim, has been arrested and that the minor is currently in a safe environment.
Meanwhile, SAPO termed the incident as “barbaric and inhumane,” adding that the accused had allegedly subjected the child to repeated physical and mental harassment while threatening her to remain silent.

“It is deeply disheartening that a child is not safe even within the confines of a home and in the care of a foster mother, who ought to provide protection and nurturing,” it said.
SAPO described the alleged act as a “savage attitude” unbecoming of any caregiver, and stated that such behaviour is a serious threat to the community and the moral fabric of society.

The organisation extended solidarity to the young victim and called upon the authorities to initiate an immediate investigation and deliver justice by awarding appropriate punishment to the accused under relevant laws.

“SAPO will not tolerate such inhuman acts and will stand firmly with the victim in her pursuit of justice,” the statement added.

The WCMA, in a statement, also expressed deep anguish and termed the act as “horrifying and inhumane.” It described the incident as a gross violation of the fundamental rights of the child and “an absolute disgrace to the sacred role of motherhood.”

“We strongly condemn this evil and cruel act against an innocent child. As a women’s body, we hang our heads in shame that such an atrocity has occurred within our society,” it stated.

The association urged the authorities to initiate swift and appropriate action under relevant child protection and criminal laws, asserting that justice must be served without delay.

The WCMA also expressed solidarity with the young victim and her family and prayed for her complete recovery—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Calling the incident a wake-up call, the association appealed to society to do more to protect, nurture, and uplift children, especially the most vulnerable.
