SASRD freshers’ social: Er. Levi Rengma urges students to strive

Medziphema, September 2 (MExN): The 22nd annual freshers’ social meet of School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) was held on September 2 with Parliamentary Secretary for Housing, Er Levi Rengma as the chief guest at SASRD auditorium here.

Er Levi congratulated all the freshers for securing a seat in the institute. “This is the first step towards fulfillment of your dreams for next four years that you are here. I hope that you can gather the best of knowledge and experience during your stay here and face the challenges that await you with confidence,” he told them.

He held that fresher’s day is one of the most important academic rituals besides graduation day in the life of students. It initiates new students into the intellectual arena, he said. “It is during this time that freshmen and women are allowed to experience the world of scholars and scholarship and the attendant rites and regalia.”

He also emphasized on the need to remember parents, guardians and sponsors, saying that they have invested financially, materially and emotionally to let the students become successful persons in life.

The Parliamentary Secretary also pointed out that colleges are central to the development of modern society; they are not mere institutions of learning, but centers of excellence. “Education and higher education is the fulcrum and pivot upon which all other developments rest and rotate around,” he added.

He further opined that the issue of quality education is a greater concern in the society, while lamenting that large population of students are graduate, but most of them are unemployable as they lack the basic technical skills needed in the job market.

He urged the students to strive hard in every sphere of life to become a successful person and contribute to the greater cause of the society.

A short speech was delivered by Prof. NS Jamir, Pro. Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, SASRD. The program was chaired by Kihika, student union president, SASRD, while welcome address was given by Prof. R.C. Gupta, Dean, NU, SASRD. Speeches on behalf of freshers were given by Imnichetla Jamir (PG) and Alemla Imchen (PG).
