SASU holds literary and cultural day

Morung Express News Kohima | January 12   Under the theme, 'Identity', the Southern Angami Students' Union (SASU) held its Biennial Literary and Cultural Day on January 12 at Kigwema Village with Menukhol John, Commissioner Secretary, Youth Resource & Sports, Team leader NEPED (Energy) as the Speaker.   Stressing on the values and traditions of Naga ancestors, Menukhol John stated the heritage and legacy passed down by the ancestors is one's identity and that one cannot confine identity with the outward appearances. Citing out the various qualities and values of elders in the Naga culture, John lamented over the failure of today's generation to practice those values which has led to certain malfunctions in the society. Taboos are no longer respected and what is prohibited are no longer considered or taken heed. As society progress, John propagated the need for progress through retaining the tradition and values.

  "Your identity and your inheritance is that you belong to a race that was hardworking and honest." asserted John who also noted the magnanimity of Naga ancestors who stressed on giving without expecting. To inherit the legacy of hard work and honesty, John urged the students to give their best in their studies, respect school authorities and elders and to maintain discipline. John also affirmed that Identity starts first from kitchen and home and to keep ones identity alive communication is important.   Teisovi Thorie, SASU President stated that the Literary and Cultural is a gathering to understand each other better, a platform where ideas can be exchanged and opinions expressed through literary and cultural aspect.   "Our struggle as a student comes in different fronts- one being through Western Education and on the other hand keeping our cultural values. Book knowledge cannot suffice us alone in bringing out the best and to par with others, we must also have a cultural approach which is absolutely indispensable- an identity we Nagas are proud and known for," stated the President who viewed that medium of literary analysis, cultural reflection should be a priority in identifying oneself.
