Say ‘no to war toys’, yes to peace

Kohima, June 17 (MExN): Peace Channel conducted capacity building programme for the Peace Club members at Christ King Hr. Sec. School and Don Bosco Hr. Sec School, Kohima on June 14. Altogether 57 students and three teacher animators attended the programmes.

With an aim to help students gain proper knowledge on the use of different types of toys, the students of Christ king Hr. Sec School, Kohima were capacitated on ‘Anti–war toys.’

Peace Channel desk in a press release stated that the resource person, Susan Kulnu began with a brainstorming asking the students on the use of toys during their childhood. “Playing with toys is an important tool in making a child understand the complex phenomena of the world around it,” she said.

However, she added, “Today, some toys that are available, unwittingly encourage factionalism and feud among children and teach them violence and elimination of one another through imitations of dangerous weapons. Children are also seen to be manipulated into replicating the violent content they see on television, videos, video games, violent cartoons and they tend to imitate these in real life.”

Kulnu concluded saying that children should choose games that develop team spirit and intelligence, rather than purchasing any war toys like guns, knives, bows and arrows, war planes, etc.

Later, the students took oath to “say no to war toys.”   In the second session, the students of Don Bosco Hr. Sec School, Kohima were capacitated on the ‘Vision of Peace-Unity in Diversity’. Susan Kulnu, who is also the Kohima district coordinator, Peace Channel, with an aim to encourage positive thinking and spread peace stated that unity in diversity plays a big role in bringing about peace in life.   She explained the characteristics of ‘culture of peace’ as “understanding, tolerance and solidarity, equality between women and men, democratic participation, education for a culture of peace, free flow of information and knowledge, sustainable economic and social development, respect for all human rights.”

While stating that multiculturalism can promote the awareness of the oneness of humanity and the consciousness of common values and norms in various cultures, she emphasised on the need to build an effective multicultural system, at regional and global levels.

The students took an oath to strive towards bringing unity and peace starting within the family and the society at large.
