As a prelude to the forthcoming silver jubilee celebration of the Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO), a seminar on the ‘Rekindling Traditions’ took place simultaneously at Viswema and Kezo Town today.
At Viswema Council Hall, Rusovil John, IFS, member secretary Nagaland Pollution Control Board talked on the topic “Conserving natural resources.” He said the importance of conservation of natural resources is to maintain ecological balance, to mitigate the effects of climate change, to prevent extinction of species, to maintain catchment area, to meet our timber/fuel requirements, to prevent natural disasters, to conserve the gene pool of rich biodiversity and to develop eco tourism.
He said Japfüphiki area is endowed with scenic landscape, pure air and clean water at it best. He termed Japfüphiki area as a land of semi- natural resources due to its very strategic location with its close proximity to Nagaland’s state capital Kohima and Imphal of Manipur state.
The National Highway 29 passes through five of villages and the remaining villages also have good connectivity with the highway. John urged the gathering to look at the wider perspective globally and not at personal immediate benefit and also promote the land resources.
Also stressing on the need to use natural resources for common benefit in a sustainable way, he also told the gathering to preserve and conserve natural resources within its own limitation and jurisdiction. He regretted that our biodiversity is exploited greatly to the point of endangerment. John further stressed on the need to avoid over exploitation of resources and avoid clear felling of forests. He encouraged the people to practice selective felling of timber, prevent forest fires, prevent pollution of water resources, propagate useful plants, protect wildlife and encourage eco-friendly activities such as eco-tourism, rock climbing, hand gliding, trekking etc.
Vimeho Khazo, joint director (Rtd) YR&S Nagaland also talked on the topic “Relevance and values of traditions.”
Earlier, SAYO Silver Jubilee organizing committee convenor Vitsorel Lcho delivered keynote address while the programme was chaired by SAYO vice president Zakeleto Tsükrü.
