Scarcity of water: MTLT ultimatum to PHED

Mokokchung, June 10 (MExN): The scarcity of potable drinking water in Mokokchung town and the alleged ‘excuses after excuses’ being furnished by the PHED in Mokokchung town has prompted the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) to issue an ultimatum to the Department on June 9.

A press release to this effect was issued by the MTLT on Wednesday, seeking “immediate necessary actions to ensure supply of regular drinking water in the town,” within 45 days with effect from June 9.

In the ultimatum addressed to the Executive Engineer, PHED, Mokokchung division, the MTLT stated that it had raised concerns and queries on the scarcity of potable drinking water in the town, to the department and other competent authorities. However, our concerns and queries have been met with excuses after excuses, it said.

It also pointed out that many families in different colonies, including those with PHED water pipe connections, have to resort to buying drinking water from water merchants. “As per our survey, there are about 2500 families in the town who are aggrieved because of the non-supply of water by the department. If the department cannot supply water even to those 2500 families having pipelines, the MTLT questions whether it can supply water to the other families who are yet to have a pipe connection. Most ironically, the families are charged the regular maintenance fees every month,” it said.

As such, the MTLT urged the Department to take immediate necessary actions to ensure supply of regular drinking water in the town within the stipulated time in the greater interest of the public.
