A ray of hope, that all is not lost yet, shone down on the children  of the much neglected Government Primary School, Old Jalukie Upper Khel with the arrival of the mid-day meal scheme. The long neglected school since the last government inspection on March 2, 2004 was formally inspected by the VEC Chairman and church elders yesterday.

The school has a strength of 48 pupils manned by 2 government appointed teachers besides 2 Assistant Teachers recruited by the VEC Chairman. As against the norms of 6-teachers provision for a primary school, the VEC Chairman re-iterated the urgency of recruiting more teaching staff since the enrollment of the pupils keep increasing each year.

“Advocating compulsory Hindi impartation in all schools has yet to take shape since providing of text books alone without recruiting subject teachers will not solve the matter”, lamented Siabeulakpe, VEC Chairman.

“We received Hindi text books every year in time but since Hindi being a completely different stream, the learning of the subject requires trained subject teachers” said the chairman.

“It is like we have been provided with a vehicle but not a driver and the only option left to make best use of the text books is to sell them off to vendors before being destroyed by moths in the cupboard” said a concerned village education managing authority of the area in lighter vein.

It may be added that most of the primary school in remote areas under the district are being run by a single or two teachers and spot inspections for hearing grievances and reports are learnt to have been carried out without actual visits. The lackadaisical attitude of the concerned department has led to the deterioration of such knowledge imparting schools, the most crucial institution in shaping the destiny of a child.
