KOHIMA, JUNE 20 (DIPR): The quality of education reflects in the capacity and capability of the children to analyze, assimilate and comprehend, said Nagaland Governor, Shyamal Datta while speaking at the State Level Seminar for review of School Curriculum based on National Curriculum Framework 2005, this morning at the Zonal Council Hall, Kohima.
After having interacted with thousands of students in the State, Datta shared his perceptions that the students’ level of awareness is rather limited in terms of Nagaland and more so in the larger canvas. He said that the spirit of inquisitiveness in the children is not fully developed and it is one’s duty to create interest in their minds. Datta also opposed the traditional mindset of the society which dictates that children should only listen, saying that the time has come when they should raise questions also. Datta pointed out that although the children are disciplined, well mannered, receive and react, interaction is yet to become part of the teaching and learning process. Therefore, curiosity and the spirit of questioning are subdued.
Datta also said that the education system is reflected in the examination results which show that the private schools fare better than the Government schools. He attributed this to the pattern of recruitment and the quality of teachers, lack of proper infrastructures etc, which mostly hits the poorer students. He therefore urged the people to address these ailments stating that mere revision of curriculum will not suffice.
Expressing remorse that children do not have the reading habit with the introduction of TV and Internet, Datta called upon the parents and teachers to reach out to the children to guide and stimulate their minds. He also emphasized on the role of emotion in education stating that emotional intelligence teaches one to deal with failures and confront challenges in life.
Stating that a conducive environment is necessary for education Datta said that when relationship between curriculum and students, students and teachers, teachers and parents and education, society and the Government is promoted, the future of the children is safe and secure and the society should work towards that goal. Minister for School Education, SCERT, Imkong L. Imchen who also spoke on the occasion stressed that the curriculum which the SCERT frames should be in complete harmony with the socio-cultural conditions of the State so that the framework is not projected as an imposition. He said that the curriculum should be friendly and not a burden for the children. He also stressed on the importance of learning the Hindi language asserting that Nagas do not realize its importance fully.
The inaugural function was chaired by Commissioner & Secretary, D K Bhalla, IAS. The welcome address was delivered by Director, SCERT, Vipralhou Kesiezie while the vote of thanks was offered by Academic Officer, Ragum Nsarangbe.
