A UGC sponsored national seminar on ‘Interdisciplinary research in chemical sciences,’ NSIRCS- 2016 under the aegis of the Department of Chemistry, Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma in collaboration with the Directorate of Higher Education took place here today at the conference hall of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.
Addressing the seminar as the chief guest, Parliamentary Secretary for Geology & Mining Dr. Imtiwabang Aier said the rapid inputs from S&T in the twentieth century too have severe repercussions for human societies, citing instances of Bhopal Gas tragedy and the Chernobyl accidents in Soviet Union.
“As technology advances, the regulating system should keep pace with the applications of chemistry,” he said adding that to do that our chemical management law must be up-dated to adapt to scientific advancements and to promote that chemical products are safe for intended users.
He also stressed on the need to learn more about policies, then only, can help research and development of the Nation, to continue innovating, enhancing more safety of life and creating more jobs to younger generations.
This includes environmental safety to combat global; warming etc. Keeping in mind the interdisciplinary research growth should not be left behind on the health aspects as we march towards 21st century, he added. Dr. Aier said that much of the progress that human kind has made till now is associated with science, adding that science has help humans to progress both materially and mentally.
Stating that the world has become a global village due to advancement in science, Dr. Aier said “This interdisciplinary approach aims to conglomerate different streams into a single block, that will be useful for the development and management of mankind, with a vision for the nation and for the NE people in particular, that will bring inclusive growth in the region.”
He said the scientific attitude should be for societal benefit rather than science which deal only with research oriented/ academic purpose.
This seminar is an endeavor to provide a platform for faculty, research scholars and students particularly to the state and north eastern region to interact with some of the most prominent researchers of the country who are actively involved in interdisciplinary research such as synthetic organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, plant chemistry, environmental chemistry, drug chemistry, food chemistry and its related area. “This will keep them abreast of the recent advances in the basic and applied aspects of chemical sciences and also to generate new ideas and apply these ideas to their research woks in this area,” a concept note stated.
Keynote address was delivered by Prof. R.H. Duncan Lyngdoh, NEHU Shillong. KSCJ principal Dr. I. Anungla Aier also spoke at the inaugural function. The inaugural function was chaired by Kenneth Punyu, Asst. Professor (Chemistry) while Shiv Kumar Mishra delivered welcome address. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. T. Tiakaba Jamir.
