Nagaland Senior Citizens Forum (NSCF) launched a book entitled “Scrolls of Strife: The Endless History of the Nagas.” This book is dedicated to the Nagas and authored by father and son duo, Dr. Homen Borgohain and Dr. Pradipta Borgohain. Dr. Pradipta Borgohain said that this book was written about the Nagas through the eye of the Nagas.
“Scrolls of Strife attempts to probe the tumultuous history of the Nagas-arguably the most distinctive but misunderstood race in India”, he said. Nagas have always fascinated writers from all over much more than any other Northeastern States, sometimes in the wrong light, said the author who holds a PhD in English from the University of Ilinios and an Associate Professor of English at Guwahati University. He was also hopeful that this book will help clear the misconceptions that people from the mainland have about the Nagas and get a fair grasp about the Nagas. He also pointed out that this book was not to achieve national integrity but an attempt to humanize the long standing Naga cause. “We are trying to reflect the mind of the Naga people through this book”, he added.
Niketu Iralu who spoke on “Special relationship of Nagas and Assamese” said that in the history of Naga-Assamese relations, there had been many ups and downs. “I feel very deeply about the value of the subject”, he commented. Terming the book as an extraordinary tribute to the Nagas, Iralu said that this book gives us a deep perception about the Nagas while also helps us to see how people are looking at the Nagas. “Scrolls of Strife: The Endless History of the Nagas”, he said is an honest examination from the perspective of a non-Naga neighbour with much goodwill towards our people and it reflects deep respect and understanding. “I believe the wisdom and understanding with our neighbour will determine the relationship with our neighbour”, he commented adding that Naga people need the goodwill and friendship of all their neighbours at this crucial juncture of the history of the Nagas. “The book is an exploration of the Naga mind and an assessment of their identity and cause. It delves into the questions of right and wrong, possibilities, difficulties and where the future Naga generations may be heading”, he said.
A good friend of the Nagas and a respected person, who is also referred to by some Assamese as the “conscience of Assam”, Homen Borgohain is a Sahitya Akademi Award-winning writer who has written novels, short stories, social and literary criticisms, poems and a memoir. Presently he is the editor of Amar Asom, a Guwahati based Assamese daily.
Earlier, Charles Chasie introduced the author while Dr. S. I. Toshi launched the book. NSCF secretary S. Ghanakhu Swu chaired the function.
