DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 15 (MExN): Botany Department, Fazl Ali College organized ‘Metsü Saya’ (Seed exhibition), an initiative commemorating the farmers’ harvests on October 12. The programme was based on collection of cereals, oil seeds and spices projects done by Botany III semester generic elective students of the college. The exhibit showcased seeds of various agricultural crops collected from local farmers by the students from within and outside the state including Bihar and UP.

Speaking at the program, I Lipokonen Jamir, Deputy Director, SARS Yisemyong encouraged the students to appreciate the value of seeds and to be involved in its conservation and exploitation to meet the global issues of food security. He mentioned of the government’s initiative for seed certification of the local races and cultivars as organic seeds and the potential scope for seeds multiplication and commercial release for those with entrepreneurial intent.

He also highlighted on the advantages of local races and cultivars by virtue of having been cultivated for eons hence by default have adapted to the local environment, pest and disease resistance and other a biotic stress tolerant properties.
Dr I Wati Imchen, Principal, FAC also spoke during the programme which was attended by faculty and students of the college.
