‘Segregation and management of wastes should start at home,’ NPCB Member Secy

Nagaland Pollution Control Board, Member Secretary, K Hukato Chishi has highlighted that segregation and management of wastes should start at home as it directly contributing towards clean air mission and minimize challenges faced by waste management authorities. 

Speaking during a workshop cum awareness programme on Compost food waste at home under National Clean Air Programme organized by NPCB and Kohima Municipal Council in Kohima, Chishi said that as individuals, we need to take care of the waste we generate by ourselves. Speaking about National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) which was started in January 2019, he said air pollution monitoring was initially being undertaken in Kohima and Dimapur district but has recently expanded to few other districts. The NPCB Secretary underscored that air quality of Kohima and Dimapur has been placed under ‘non-attainment city with respect to Particulate Matter (PM10) and therefore various efforts are being undertaken to improve air quality. He said composting waste at home, are simple as wet waste are easily biodegradable and compostable. Convener for Sanitation and water supply, KMC, Thenusou Sekhose said sustainable waste management, proper waste disposal and overall hygiene reflects the civic sense of our community. She said waste management is a collective effort and everyone's responsibility. The convener that composting at home is not only an environmental practice, but a return to traditional values of living in harmony with nature. Hands-on training was imparted on composting unit and during the awareness session, topics on ambient air quality was taken up by Olivi G Chophy, Senior Scientific Assistant, Yanathung Kithan, Scientist B took up solid waste management and Mission Life was taken up by Rongsenben Longkumer, Junior Scientific Assistant.
