Mon, July 17 (MExN): District level seminar on ‘conserving biodiversity and threatened species in community conserved areas’ was held at Council Hall Mon on July 17.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Mon, Hiazu Meru said protecting the environment and conserving the biodiversity is everybody’s responsibility, stated a DIPR report.
Citing an example, he stated that the presence elephant and tiger in the district became a story because all were hunted and eaten up, and likewise other species will follow. He urged upon the gathering to start protecting and conserving the flora and fauna for our future generation.
Keeping in mind the Naga culture of directly depending on biodiversity like construction of house and hunting, on this he further advised to start convergence policy where all stake holder departments have to come together in order to uplift the village economy and the villagers should form a Village Forest Committee, he added.
Divisional Forest Officer, Mon, Priy Singh, IFS said that the biodiversity of Nagaland is unique and very rich in flora and fauna but it is gradually degrading due to deforestation, habitat loses, poaching of animals and pollutions. Many medicinal plants species in the region has become endangered, he added. He also mentioned that, protecting diversity will bring a huge benefit like supply of food, natural resources, medicines, energy and shelters. He requested the gathering to spread awareness on importance of biodiversity and start protecting biodiversity.
Heirang Lungalang, Secretary NCCAF said Nagaland Community Conserved Areas Forum (NCCAF) is a common platform created by the Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) of Nagaland to share experience, learning, good conservation practices and fostering a collective voice for CCAs in the state.
Tapas Das, Programme Manager, FES and Pikato V Jimo, Member (POU), NEPED were the resource persons during the seminar.
The programme was attended by all village councils under Mon district, GBs, NGOs and students. The programme was organised by NCCAF and supported by Foundation for Ecological Security, NEPED and Forest Department.
